Hydrotherapy or Aquatic Physiotherapy is physiotherapy performed in water for the treatment of varying conditions and disease. It provides a relaxing and supportive environment and enables people with pain, post-surgery conditions, arthritis and mobility issues, to participate in physical activity and functional rehabilitation. The properties of the water and a variety of treatment techniques (including manual therapy, facilitation and exercise) are used to design specific treatments to address individual conditions/goals.
The warmth and buoyancy of a water environment can be used to:
Reduce pain
Decrease/progress weight bearing
Promote muscle relaxation
Increase range and movement and flexibility
Increase strength and endurance
Core stability and balance reactions
Improve general fitness
